Yunam Peak Expedition Route

Manali → Jispa → Bharatpur → Acclimatization Camp → High/Summit Camp → Yunam Peak Summit → Bharatpur → Manali

The expedition gradually moves from the lower altitude of Manali towards the high-altitude environment of Lahaul.

The journey crosses the dramatic landscape around Baralacha La, with views of high Himalayan ranges and alpine lakes including Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal on the approach.

Detailed Yunam Peak Expedition Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Manali | Expedition Briefing & Gear Check

Altitude: 2,050 m

Arrive in Manali and report to the expedition team.

After check-in, the expedition team conducts a detailed briefing covering:

• Expedition route
• Weather and mountain conditions
• Safety procedures
• High-altitude precautions
• Equipment inspection
• Clothing requirements
• Summit-day procedures
• Emergency protocols

This is also the time to complete any last-minute equipment rental or purchase.

Participants should use the day to rest properly and prepare mentally and physically for the expedition.

Day 2 – Manali to Jispa

Altitude: Approx. 3,200–3,300 m

After breakfast, begin the journey towards Jispa.

The drive enters the spectacular Lahaul Valley through the Atal Tunnel and continues through the changing landscapes of the western Himalayas.

The journey takes you towards the high-altitude environment of Lahaul.

On arrival at Jispa, check into the accommodation and allow your body to begin adapting to the increased elevation.

Depending on the expedition team’s assessment, a short acclimatization walk may be conducted.

Drive: Approximately 4–6 hours depending on road and traffic conditions

Day 3 – Jispa to Bharatpur High-Altitude Camp

Altitude: Approx. 4,500–4,700 m

Today the expedition moves significantly higher.

After breakfast, drive towards the Baralacha La region.

The route passes through spectacular high-altitude landscapes and may include views of Deepak Tal and Suraj Tal before reaching the Baralacha La area.

Continue towards Bharatpur and establish the expedition camp.

The rapid altitude gain makes this an important acclimatization stage. Participants should avoid unnecessary physical exertion and concentrate on hydration, nutrition and rest.

The expedition team will assess the condition of each participant before proceeding further.

Day 4 – Acclimatization & Mountain Training

Altitude: Approx. 4,700–5,200 m

This is one of the most important days of the expedition.

The objective is not simply to cover distance but to prepare the body for the higher camps and summit attempt.

A controlled acclimatization hike will be conducted according to weather, snow and team conditions.

Training may include:

• Walking techniques at high altitude
• Ascending and descending techniques
• Use of trekking poles
• Crampon familiarization where required
• Ice axe handling where conditions require it
• Rope movement
• Self-arrest principles
• Team movement
• Summit-day safety procedures

The expedition team will also monitor participants for symptoms of altitude illness.

Important: The exact training and equipment used will depend on the prevailing route and snow conditions.

Day 5 – Move to High / Summit Camp

Altitude: Approx. 5,200–5,400 m

After breakfast, begin the move towards the higher camp.

The terrain becomes increasingly rugged and exposed. Depending on the route and conditions, the team may encounter scree, loose rock, snow patches and steep sections.

The expedition crew will establish the higher camp.

Once camp is established, participants should focus on:

• Hydration
• Nutrition
• Rest
• Equipment preparation
• Summit clothing
• Headlamp and batteries
• Gloves and thermal layers
• Crampons/technical equipment as required

The evening briefing will cover the summit attempt, expected weather, route conditions and turnaround procedures.

An early dinner and rest are essential because the summit push may begin during the night.

Day 6 – Summit Day: Yunam Peak 6,111 m

The Ultimate Day of the Expedition

Summit Altitude: 6,111 m / 20,049 ft

Summit day normally begins very early, often around 1:00–2:00 AM, depending on weather, snow conditions, route assessment and the expedition leader’s decision. Published itineraries commonly use a pre-dawn start for the summit push.

After a light breakfast and final equipment check, the summit team begins climbing towards Yunam Peak.

The ascent can involve:

• Loose scree
• Rocky terrain
• Snow patches
• Steep sections
• Cold winds
• Exposed ridges
• High-altitude terrain

The pace will remain controlled.

At this altitude, speed is less important than maintaining a steady rhythm and conserving energy.

As the team gains elevation, oxygen levels become significantly lower and every step requires greater effort.

The final section towards the summit demands maximum concentration.

Summit – 6,111 m

Standing at approximately 6,111 metres, the summit provides spectacular high-altitude views across the surrounding Himalayan ranges.

Depending on weather and visibility, climbers may experience breathtaking views towards the Chandra-Bhaga and Mulkila ranges and the wider high-altitude landscapes of Lahaul and the Zanskar region.

After a controlled summit celebration and photographs, the team begins the descent.

Summit objective: Yunam Peak – 6,111 m
Start: Usually around 1:00–2:00 AM
Duration: Approximately 10–14 hours depending on conditions and team performance
Overnight: High Camp / Bharatpur depending on expedition plan and conditions

Summit Safety Rule

Reaching the summit is never guaranteed.

The expedition leader may cancel, postpone or turn around the summit attempt because of:

• Severe weather
• High winds
• Poor visibility
• Excessive snowfall
• Unsafe snow conditions
• Rockfall
• Medical concerns
• Team fatigue
• Route instability

Safety always takes priority over summit success.

Day 7 – Descend to Bharatpur & Drive Towards Manali

After breakfast, descend from the high camp towards Bharatpur.

The descent can be physically demanding after summit day, so participants should maintain a controlled pace.

Once back at the roadhead/camp area, board the expedition vehicle and begin the return journey towards Manali.

The drive passes through the spectacular Lahaul Valley and continues towards Manali.

Depending on road conditions, weather and the team’s physical condition, arrival in Manali may be in the evening.

Day 8 – Departure from Manali

After breakfast, check out from the hotel.

Your Yunam Peak Expedition officially concludes.

Participants can continue their onward journey towards Chandigarh, Delhi, Bhuntar or other destinations.

We recommend keeping onward travel flexible after a high-altitude expedition.

Day 9 – Buffer / Reserve Day

A mandatory reserve day is strongly recommended for Yunam Peak.

The buffer day may be used if:

• Summit weather is unsuitable
• Heavy snowfall affects the route
• Strong winds prevent summit movement
• The team needs additional acclimatization
• Road conditions cause delays
• Summit-day timing needs to be changed

If the summit attempt is completed successfully without using the buffer day, the group can proceed with the planned return schedule.

The reserve day is an important part of responsible expedition planning rather than an optional luxury. Several published Yunam itineraries include a dedicated buffer day for weather-related or summit-related contingencies.
